The Twin Run - LUMC Fetal Therapy & Stichting TAPS Support

De Twin Run is in 2021 ontstaan, toen Mart Smit, vader van een gecompliceerde monochoriale meerling, geld voor meerlingonderzoek van het LUMC wilde inzamelen als dank voor de gekregen zorg.
Ondersteund door de TAPS Support Foundation rende hij de route die zijn kinderen na de geboorte tussen de ziekenhuizen hebben afgelegd.
Op 14 mei 2023 wordt de nieuwe editie van de Twin Run georganiseerd. Deze editie is gekoppeld aan de Leiden Marathon.
Dit jaar gaat het geld van de Twin Run naar de Well Bee study, een onderzoek dat als doel heeft de impact van een gecompliceerde monochoriale meerlingzwangerschap op de kwaliteit van leven van ouders in kaart te brengen. Wanneer bij een monochoriale meerlingzwangerschap de complicatie TTS, TAPS, sFGR of TRAP wordt vastgesteld, kan dat zeer ingrijpend zijn voor de aanstaande ouders.
Zij krijgen te maken met angst en onzekerheid over de gezondheid en overlevingskansen van hun meerling, zowel tijdens de zwangerschap als na de geboorte. Deze periode kan tot hoge mate van stress, onzekerheid of somberheid leiden.
Tijdens de Well Bee Study zal het LUMC in gesprek gaan met ouders om erachter te komen hoe zij deze periode ervaren hebben, welke zorg geholpen heeft, en wat zij gemist hebben. Hiermee hoopt het LUMC in te toekomst ouders van een gecompliceerde meerlingzwangerschap beter te kunnen helpen en ondersteunen, waardoor zowel het welzijn van de ouders als van de hun meerling verbeterd wordt.

The Twin Run was created in 2021 when Mart Smit, a father of complicated monochorionic multiples, wanted to collect money for multiple pregnancy research from the LUMC to thank them for their care.
Supported by the TAPS Support Foundation, he ran the route his children took between their hospitals after birth.
The new edition of the Twin Run will be organized on May 14, 2023. This edition is linked to the Leiden Marathon.
This year, the money from the Twin Run will go to the Well Bee study, a study that aims to investigate the impact of a complicated monochorionic multiple pregnancy on the quality of life of their families.
When a complication such as TTTS, TAPS, sFGR or TRAP is diagnosed in a monochorionic multiple pregnancy, this can be very drastic for the parents-to-be. They have to deal with fear and uncertainty about the health and survival chances of their babies, both during pregnancy and after birth. This might lead to a high degree of stress and depressive thoughts. In the Well Bee Study, the LUMC will talk to parents to find out how they experienced this time in their lives. They will try to find out what things helped them, and what they missed.
With this, the LUMC hopes to be able to better help and support parents of a complicated multiple pregnancy in the future, thereby improving the well-being of both the parents and their multiple pregnancies
